LEONARD, ND (KFGO) – A Friday night 2-vehicle crash near Leonard has sent 7 people to the hospital.
At around 9:31 p.m. Friday, an SUV drove by 18-year-old Abraham Cruz, of Melrose was carrying four passengers going southbound on ND Highway 18, 6 miles north of Leonard, while at the same time 18-year-old Jaylin Parras from Georgetown MN was going northbound in a van with one passenger.
Cruz was distracted by his GPS and did not realize traffic had stopped in front of him. Cruz drove into the NB lane to avoid a rear-end crash. Parras was northbound, Cruz struck the van’s front bumper.
Cruz entered the east ditch of Highway 18 and rolled, coming to rest on its passenger
side. Both vehicles suffered heavy damage and were totaled in the collision. A juvenile passenger from the van was flown by Sanford AirMed to Sanford Hospital in Fargo. Parras and all occupants in Cruz’s vehicle were taken by ambulance to Sanford Hospital in Fargo. None of the injuries appear life-threatening. Cruz was cited for Overtaking Where Prohibited and Failure to Maintain Control – Distracted Driving.
The crash remains under investigation by the NDHP.
