University of Southern California football coach Clay Helton held on for as long as he could, but he finally ran out of rope.
USC athletic director Mike Bohn informed the media that Monday that Helton has been relieved of his duties. Trojans cornerbacks coach Donte Williams will serve as the interim coach for the remainder of the season.
Helton’s fate was sealed following a troubling home loss Saturday to Stanford, 42-28. Helton took over the Trojans program during the 2015 season. He guided the team to a Rose Bowl victory over Penn State in January 2018 and was 46-24 overall.
While USC remains a top-tier college football brand, the results on the field have been disappointing since Pete Carroll’s departure in 2009. They have just four 10-win seasons over that span and a 3-4 bowl record.
USC travels to Washington State for another Pac-12 tilt on Saturday, September 18th.
