FARGO (KFGO) – More than 30 Fargo parents and citizens came together today to protest the Fargo School District’s mask mandate.
The protest comes after the Fargo School Board approved a policy requiring face coverings for all staff, students, and visitors, regardless of vaccination status or community transmission rates earlier this month. Demonstrators, carried signs with messages that read “You’re bullying kids” and “Unmask our kids” lined up on the sidewalk along 13th Ave. S.
Event organizer and leader of the Facebook group “Let parents decide that” Cassie Schmidt says the school board has no authority to make these decisions.
“I’m really hoping that Fargo Public Schools would take note. I don’t believe they have any statitory authority to make these decisions especially when there’s nothing in the North Dakota century code that says they have the authority to turn public health recommendations into requirements,” said Schmidt.
“When you take your child to the movies, grocery store, and restaurants and they don’t have to wear a mask but they have to sit inside their school building all day long with one, whether or not parents agree there’s a problem with that,” Schmidt added.
Schmidt says another rally will be held Tuesday from 6pm-8pm at the Hilton Garden Inn in Fargo.
The Fargo School Board voted in favor of the mask policy 6-3.
