Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey
MINNEAPOLIS – A one-point-six-billion-dollar budget proposal Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey unveiled Friday would restore funding for the police department to about 192 million dollars — nearly where it was before the murder of George Floyd.
Mayor Frey said even though the city has invested in other safety programs, “It would be disingenuous to expect these new, complementary programs to succeed simply by breaking down the work of others.”
Voters will decide this November whether the police department will be replaced with a new Department of Public Safety which would take a “comprehensive public health approach” and could include licensed police officers.
Frey’s Minneapolis city budget plan relies on a five-and-half-percent property tax levy increase, federal American Rescue money, and cash on hand.
