WAHPETON (KFGO) – You may think college sports are over for the season, and in some cases, spring graduation had already happened but one local collegiate softball team has punched their ticket to Nationals.
The North Dakota State College of Science Wildcat Softball team are on their way to the NJCAA Division III Softball Championships in Syracuse, New York. They beat Saint Cloud Tech, 6-3, this weekend to advance. NDSCS is (30-21) and 2nd in the country as a team in home runs hit and strikeouts recorded. At the beginning of the season COVID-19 hit the team, and players said they didn’t get along, but they came together and friends became family.
“In the beginning of the season, we didn’t all get along and COVID was difficult but now at the end of the season, I can proudly say that we’re all like family and we all get along and there’s no issues between us anymore,” said sophomore pitcher Sydney Schott.
“Our coach told us a couple weeks ago how many teams were left in North Dakota and we were all like, ‘yea we want to be the last ones in North Dakota and keep going and win,’” added sophomore infielder Grace Hagen.
Head coach Michael Oehlke was named the Region XIII Coach of the Year.
NDSCS finished third at the 2018 NJCAA National Tournament. With two appearances since the program’s inception in 2015.
The Wildcats leave Monday and will enter this year’s national tournament – held May 27-29 in Syracuse, New York – riding a 13-game winning streak.
