Planting season is underway as the Department of Agriculture released the first weekly Crop Progress report for 2021 Monday. USDA says planting has begun for barley, corn, cotton, oats, rice, sorghum, spring wheat, and sugarbeets. By this time last year, two percent of the corn crop had been planted, and two percent has been planted so far in 2021. Six percent of the cotton crop is in the ground, one percentage point behind the same time last year. Meanwhile, 14 percent of the sorghum crop is planted, one percentage point behind a year ago. Barley, oats, rice, spring wheat and sugarbeet plantings are similar to 2020 progress.
North Dakota:
There were 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDAโs National Agricultural Statistics Service. Reports indicated that, on average, producers intend to begin fieldwork on April 9th. Topsoil moisture
supplies rated 59% very short, 33% short, 8% adequate, and 0% surplus. Subsoil moisture
supplies rated 52% very short, 30% short, 18% adequate, and 0% surplus.
Field Crops Report: Spring wheat planted was 1%.
Winter wheat condition rated 13% very poor, 40% poor, 38% fair, 9% good, and 0% excellent.
Oats planted was 1%.
South Dakota:
There were 5.3 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDAโs National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Topsoil moisture supplies rated 25% very short, 43% short, 32% adequate, and 0% surplus.
Subsoil moisture supplies rated 25% very short, 48% short, 27% adequate, and 0% surplus.
Field Crops Report: Winter wheat condition rated 3% very poor, 22% poor, 48% fair, 27%
good, and 0% excellent.
Spring wheat planted was 11%, ahead of 4% for the five-year average.
Oats planted was 6%, near 3% average.
Minnesota:
Mostly warm and dry conditions in Minnesota allowed farmers to begin planting small grains and potatoes with
3.9 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending April 4, 2021, according to USDAโs National
Agricultural Statistics Service. Other field activities included spring tillage as well as spreading manure and
fertilizer.
Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 12% very short, 31% short, 53% adequate, and 4% surplus. Subsoil
moisture supplies were rated 6% very short, 37% short, 54% adequate, and 3% surplus. Many reports mentioned
dry and windy conditions.
