FARGO (KFGO) – Firefighters rescued two kayakers on the Red River yesterday. Fargo firefighters, police officers, and FM Ambulance responded to a report of an overturned two-person kayak in the Red River near Dike East in downtown Fargo at 3:15 p.m. yesterday.
The kayak capsized near the rapids. A caller reported that there were two people in the water and neither had been able to get to shore.
When responders arrived, one kayaker had made it to shore 300 yards north of where the kayak capsized the other was still stuck in waist-deep water only a few yards from shore near the boat landing on the Fargo side.
The combination of the swift current and poor footing made it impossible for her to get to shore alone. Firefighters pulled her to shore. Firefighters and FM Ambulance personnel began warming both patients because of the cold water temperatures.
Local first responders remind the public that the effects of hypothermia can begin within 3-5 minutes at the river’s current water temperature.
