BURNSVILLE, Minn. (MSUM Athletics) — Minnesota State University Moorhead junior guard Lorenzo McGhee has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division Newcomer of the Year, the league announced on Wednesday. McGhee was also named to the All-NSIC North First Team.
Dragon junior guard Bryce Irsfeld was named to the All-NSIC North Second Team while sophomore forward Dane Zimmer was honorable mention.
McGhee, a transfer from Division I Nicholls State, leads the Dragons in scoring this season, averaging 14.1 points per game. He’s scored in double figures in nine of the Dragons’ 12 games, with a high of 21 points twice (vs. Bemidji State and UMary). He had a double-double in a win at Minnesota Crookston on Jan. 9.
In 10 north division games McGhee is averaging 13.5 points per game.
He’s averaging 5.1 rebounds per game and also is shooting 83.6 percent (46-of-55) from the foul line this season.
Irsfeld is averaging 12.6 points per game for the Dragons, second on the team. He’s shooting 40 percent (22-of-55) from three and 88.6 percent (31-of-35) from the foul line. In 10 north division games he’s scored in double figures nine times.
The Browerville, Minn., native leads at 3.3 assists per game.
Zimmer is averaging 12.3 points per game this season and is shooting a team-best 65.6 percent from the field. He had a career-high 27 points on Jan. 23 at Minnesota Duluth.
MSUM (9-3) faces Minnesota State, Mankato in the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament on Friday at 7 p.m. in Sioux Falls.
