COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (UND Athletics) — The University of North Dakota hockey team swept Omaha last week, clinching back-to-back National Collegiate Hockey Conference regular season championships. With that, UND had a pair of individual accolades in the convincing 4-1 and 7-1 wins as senior Collin Adams was named the Bauer NCHC Forward of the Week and junior Jacob Bernard-Docker picked up defenseman of the week accolades.
Both players are being honored by the league for the first time this season, bringing UND’s total to 14 winners among a dozen different players. A North Dakota forward has been the NCHC Forward of the Week in five of the last six weeks in which they were eligible.Overall, only one week all season has gone without a North Dakota player among the weekly honorees in weeks in which they’ve played.
Adams collected four points with two goals and two assists and was a +3 rating in UND’s 4-1 and 7-1 wins. The Brighton, Mich., native stretched his point-streak to five straight games with an assist Friday, then his first three-point night of the season Saturday. He now has six multi-point games on the year with nine goals and 14 assists for 23 points, third-most on the team. He was in one each of the last three goals of the evening, scoring one of UND’s three power play goals, adding an assist on another man-advantage tally and burying a second goal in the third to salt away the win and North Dakota’s league-high fourth NCHC Penrose Cup.
Bernard-Docker also had a four-point weekend with a goal and three helpers. In the opener, he got North Dakota going with a goal midway through the first period as UND upped it record to 16-0-0 when it scores first this season. He added an assist on both the game-winning goal and the final goal of the evening. Saturday, he helped setup the first of three straight power play goals for North Dakota. Omaha had only allowed six power play goals all season coming into the series. For the year, JBD has 13 points (2-11–13) and is tied for the lead in plus/minus rating at +16.
North Dakota has two weeks left of the regular season with single games on the next two Fridays against Omaha before it hosts the NCHC Frozen Faceoff (this year, an entire league single-elimination tournament) at Ralph Engelstad Arena on Mar. 12-16.
