Second honor in last three weeks for UND’s junior netminder
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.– Junior Adam Scheel allowed just one goal all weekend and recorded his third shutout of the season in the home sweep over Colorado College to earn him National Collegiate Hockey Conference Goalie of the Week accolades. Scheel improved to 11-2-1 on the season with the wins and picks up his second weekly honor in the past three weeks.
The Lakewood, Ohio native has now allowed either zero or one goal in exactly half of his starts this season (7 of 14). He’s stymied the Tigers with just two goals allowed combined in his four wins over CC this year.
Saturday, Scheel only squandered a single goal in the second period of a 4-1 win. Sunday, he made 15 stops to earn his third shutout of the season. The UND penalty kill has been exceptionally good over the past 11 games, killing off an incredible 41 of the the last 42 penalties. Scheel has been an integral part of that success as UND killed off a pair of lengthy 5-on-3 situations in recent games. The first was a minor that happened inside of a major penalty in the win at Denver last Monday in a 5-1 win. Saturday, UND took a pair of minors within five seconds of each other, but Scheel and the Fighting Hawks were up to the task to thwart the two-man advantage.
On the season, Scheel’s 11 wins are tied for the most in the country. He carries a league-best 1.77 goals against average and a .928 save percentage, second-best in the NCHC.
No. 2/3 North Dakota returns to Baxter Arena in Omaha this week to begin the final stretch of the season which sees UND play Omaha six times over the final eight regular season games.
