MOORHEAD, Minn. (KFGO) – Complaints about long waits experienced by those seeking Real-ID licenses at the Clay County DMV office in Moorhead are being addressed with plans in the works to streamline the process.
County Commissioner Jenny Mongeau says it’s unacceptable when people report they are spending four or five hours waiting to get their license when it should take about 45 minutes.
She says wait times are being monitored to adjust staffing and the board is making sure the county administrator, the department head, and the DMV administrator get a better understanding of the process and where there are inefficiencies.
Mongeau says one of the problems is the Real-ID enforcement deadline that was extended because of the pandemic. That has created a backlog for those needing to get a license. Scheduled appointments at the Clay County office are currently booked until March.
The Clay County board has just approved hiring an additional employee, who will help but won’t immediately remedy the wait times.
Mongeau says Clay County is not alone. Many other Minnesota counties are also experiencing what she calls a “nightmare” and are seeking solutions.
