FARGO – North Dakota State University escaped with a 74-67 overtime win over the University of North Dakota, despite not having a field goal for the opening 10 minutes and 19 seconds of the game.
Trailing 59-50 with 2:44 left in the fourth quarter, NDSU closed out regulation with an 11-2 run inside the Scheels Center.
UND junior forward Megan Zander missed a contested layup which sent the game to overtime, where the Bison took their first lead of the game.
Following a Zander made free-throw, NDSU sophomore guard Kadie Deaton made a top of the key jumper with 4:23 left to play and the Bison never trailed for the remainder of the game.
NDSU sophomore Ryan Cobbins finished with a double-double as she scored 8 of her 18 points in overtime and grabbed 11 rebounds.
“This game definitely had an edge to it and it was definitely tough to begin with,” said Cobbins. “They (UND) came out swinging first and we were just getting punched in the face, but eventually we figured it out.”
UND sophomore forward Julia Fleecs scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, while teammate Megan Zander added 20 points.
UP NEXT
UND (0-5 overall) closes out the non-conference portion of their schedule on the road against Toledo on Monday at noon.
NDSU (4-1 overall) travels to Lawrence, Kansas for their second game against a Big 12 opponent in the Kansas Jayhawks on Monday at 1 p.m.
SERIES
The Bison swept the Fighting Hawks last season and won four of the last five games in the series.
