Dickinson, N.D. (KFGO) -Three North Dakota County sheriffs have said their departments will not enforce the state’s new COVID-19 policies.
Stark County Sheriff Corey Lee said in a Facebook video that the department will not enforce the state’s new mandates issued by Governor Burgum, instead, leaving that up to individual businesses. Lee said the department will be working to help promote a message of community safety.
Hettinger County Sheriff Sarah Warner said her department made the same decision. She said the department will not enforce mask and business mandates ordered by the governor. She said this is a health issue and should not become a criminal matter.
Warner said her office is aware of people’s concerns that state government may take action against their businesses and said the sheriff’s office will do its best to protect citizens against what she calls “unjust actions.”
Warner said she trusts citizens are capable of taking the steps necessary to protect themselves and others based upon their own circumstances.
Bowman County Sheriff Frank Eberle also said his department won’t enforce the mask mandate issued by the governor.
