After a back-and-forth first half of play, the Lisbon Broncos outscored the the Velva Aggies 30-8 in the second half to secure a spot in the Dakota Bowl. The Broncos will face off against the defending champion Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich Cardinals, who defeated Lisbon in the semi-finals last season.
The key to success this afternoon for Lisbon was senior running back Jordan Sours. Sours got the Broncos on the board with a 74-yard touchdown midway trough the first quarter. Sours went on to collect 4 more touchdowns and finished the game with a dominant 297 rushing yards on top of his five touchdowns. Lisbon’s quarterback, Hunter Schultz, tacked on the team’s sixth touchdown of the game late in the fourth quarter as well as an interception earlier in the game to help seal the game and their trip to the state finals.
The Velva Aggies may have come up short, but senior quarterback and senior Gage Florence went out with a bang as the two of them connected for two of the Aggies’ three touchdowns, including a 40-yard gem and a tricky hook and ladder maneuver.
Velva finished the season with a 10-1 record in their second straight season advancing to the state class A semi-finals. Lisbon is now 9-0 and will look to avenge last year’s semi-final loss to the Cardinals in the Dakota Bowl next Friday at 8:10 AM in the Fargodome.
