It’s been awhile but I finally did it. My aunt let me go through 2 boxes of photo negatives that turned out to be from the 1920’s. The HISTORY I discovered.
My grandparents (mom’s folks) were married in 1926 and as I looked through the 61 negatives I had digitally developed sure enough there they were, Harry and Josie Engen of Holt Minnesota.
Some probably before they were married and a few we were guessing after. They were married over 60 years and you can sense the simply times of the early 20’s and also how much in love they were.
I’m going to show you a few photos throughout the next several weeks. Even the ones who I have no clue who’s in them. But it shows the different style of dress, really interesting hairstyles, animals including a dog who we see grow up. Musical instruments, and even someones 1924 (I’m told) Harley-Davidson motorcyle.
Are you ready for the first batch? Here we go!

My grandfather loved his violin, but some relatives said he never really learned how to play it.
My grandpa…what a sharp dresser huh?
My grandma on the right with her future sis-in-law feeding the chickens.
Grandpa followed politics but our best guess is that the truck decorated with the American flags will be part of the 4th of July celebration of either 1925 or 26.
I’m lucky to have my family find these…it’s like a treasure hunt into history. If you ever discover something like this in the future but sure to take advantage of it.
It’s also been very therapeutic, a little something to take my mind off of this pandemic.
