BATTLE LAKE, MN (KFGO) – A church with a nearly 150-year-old history was destroyed by over the weekend. The fire at Battle Lake Bethel Lutheran Church, about 11 miles from Battle Lake, happened during thunderstorms late Saturday night.
First responders said the blaze was so intense the building began to collapse even before the fire was put down. No injuries were reported.
The church has about 150 members. Worship services scheduled for late Sunday morning were moved to the parking lot next to the charred rubble of the church. The church was formed in 1876.
The official cause of the fire has not been determined, but Pastor Todd Hylden said that a lightning strike likely sparked the blaze.
