U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Fargo National Cemeteryto host virtual Memorial Day event
FARGO, N.D. (May 9, 2020) – The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Fargo National
Cemetery will host its inaugural virtual Memorial Day event on May 25, 2020.
Visit www.facebook.com/fargonationalcemeterycommittee to view the event on May 25.
North Dakota Congressman Kelly Armstrong will provide the keynote address during the event
to honor fallen service members. Regional congressional delegations as well as the governors of
North Dakota and Minnesota will also provide remarks during the event.
The event, held virtually as a COVID-19 precaution, is coordinated by the Fargo National
Cemetery Volunteer Committee.
The Fargo National Cemetery serves the burial needs of more than 30,000 Veterans, their
spouses, and eligible family members from North Dakota and northwest Minnesota.

Grand Forks 9 a.m Monday, May 25, American Legion Post 6 will hold a private ceremony at Memorial Park North Cemetery, which will be attended by fewer than 10 members.The event will include an invocation by Paul Robinette, Post 6 chaplain, some appropriate readings and the presentation of wreaths in memory of the Grand Army of the Republic, Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Grenada/Lebanon/Panama, Persian Gulf War, Iraq Conflict, Afghanistan, and “all who perished on land, sea or air.Grand Forks Mayor Michael Brown, a former ICBM missile launch control officer at Grand Forks Air Force Base, will be the guest speaker.
At 11 a.m., on Memorial Day, the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 2 and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts in Grand Forks will co-host a 21-gun salute at Memorial Park South Cemetery Guard. Seven riflemen, three flag holders and a bugler will take part in the salute.
East Grand Forks, American Legion Post 157 and VFW Post 3817 will do a rifle salute and play Taps at Resurrection Cemetery late Monday morning, said Mike Coleman, VFW commander. Before that, the Honor Guard will travel to six rural cemeteries near East Grand Forks and do the same.
Park River, N.D., American Legion Post 147 will do a 21-gun salute at about 11 a.m. on Memorial Day. But Post 147 won’t have a program, as it typically does, said Vern Houser, post commander.
- The Wahpeton American Legion Hafner-Miller-Ross Post 20 and Woody Keeble VFW Post 4324 will not hold any public services, but will raise flags at cemeteries. There will be no joint service at the Dakota Avenue-Minnesota Avenue bridge.
- Mantador Memorial VFW Post No. 9317 will hold its graveside services at 9 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery of Mantador, 9:30 a.m. at St. John’s Belford Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Hankinson; 10 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran rural cemetery, Great Bend; and 10:15 a.m. at Great Bend Methodist Cemetery. There will not be a meal this year following the graveside services.
- Lidgerwood Bullis Post No. 84 of the American Legion will hold its annual Memorial Day service at 10:30 a.m. at the American Legion Park. There will not be a program or public dinner following the gun salute.
- Milton Stevenson Post No. 106 of Fairmount will not be holding its annual Memorial Day program this year.
- Hankinson American Legion Eberhard Post No. 88 will present its annual Memorial Day services this year. Lowering of flag at half staff will take place at 7 a.m. May 25, which will be raised again at noon, both at the Hankinson Community Center. Graveside services will be held at 8 a.m. at Tyson Cemetery, 8:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, 9 a.m. at Emmanuel United Church of Christ Cemetery, 9:15 a.m. at the Hillside Cemetery, 9:30 a.m. at St. Phillip’s Catholic Church Cemetery and 10:30 a.m. at the Legion Memorial Site. There will not be a public meal following the services.
- Barney VFW will only be raising flags at cemetery, no services or meal will be held.
