FARGO (KFGO) – One a 6-3 vote, the Fargo School Board approved making boundary changes to resolve student overcrowding on the south side.
The plan will move some students in the Clara Barton- Hawthorne Elementary area east of University Drive to the the Ben Franklin and Fargo North attendance area’s beginning in the fall of 2021.
Board member Jim Johnson made the motion. He said the school district will eventually have to build a new school in south Fargo, an area that will continue to grow. “But I do not believe today is the day to go spend $60 million and put new operational expenses in our budget until we see what comes forward over the next 24 months.” Johnson said that will give the board a better handle on what will happen with state funding and student enrollment.
By a narrow margin, the board also voted to come up with recommendations for boundary changes that would shift some students at Discovery Middle School and Davies High School to the attendance area’s around Hawthorne Elementary and Fargo South.
