In this episode:
Can you use lawn fertilizer on the garden? Be careful! Most lawn fertilizer is very high in nitrogen, which is good for grass, but not for vegetables. It would be better to get a vegetable specific fertilizer.
Need something to do now: Plant grass seed soon and use grab grass killer (but not at the same time!).
Planting a new tree where an old one was? Be sure to clean out all the debris and fill with new dirt before you plant the tree.
Have iris plants that need to be divided? You may want to wait to divide until July or August. However, if you need to get it done now, get the whole “clump” up, you’ll the roots come in ‘segments’, take the end off and throw the older parts away and plant it very shallow.
Pine trees near your flower garden may cause problems because of shade, but also because pine trees could take the needed water and nutrients for your flower garden, so be sure to water and fertilize more.
Moving an apricot tree about 3 1/2 feet tall… make sure you go a foot and half around the base (the roots should be pretty shallow) and replant with a good watering.
Do you need to till each spring? If you can, it’s helpful and, while you are at it, work in some organic matter.
Christmas cactus is blooming but the leaves are turning yellow… if it has good drainage, use distilled water to wash through the plant well and then the next time you water, use fertilizer.
Potato turrets! Want a new way to grow potatoes without the bugs? Try growing ‘a pillar’ of potatoes. Dave says the only concern is to water and fertilize enough. It may be hard to keep nutrients and water in.
