COLFAX, ND (KFGO) – The graduates of Richland #44 School District in Colfax have received quite a gift thanks to the generosity of the late Darrel Hendrickson and his family. Graduating students from 2019 and for at least the next 20 years are each eligible for a $10,000 scholarship. There are 26 students in the class of 2020. The graduating class of the rural school usually ranges between 15 and 25 students.
Hendrickson, a Colfax area farmer, passed away at the age of 83 in 2016. In his will, he left $4 million to the school district.
School Superintendent Dr. Britney Gandhi says the Richland #44 Foundation made the decision on the scholarships this week. She says the board decided the amount of the scholarship could tip the scales for students uncertain they could afford to go on to college or a trade school.
In order to receive the scholarship, a student must have completed three of their four high school years at #Richland 44, and are either enrolled, accepted, or are considering pursuing education at a post-secondary school. Students have 6 years to request the scholarship and 6 years to finish their education.
The foundation board also decided to provide $2500 scholarship offers to Richland #44 graduates in the classes of 2016, 2017, and 2018.
