It Takes Two with Amy & JJ bring you Plant Talk with Dave Decock. The longest running program on KFGO! Dave is a retired horticulturalist who can answer questions about trees, plants, shrubs, soil, poison ivy, pests and so much more. On Thursdays from 1pm to 2pm, you can hear Plant Talk live on The Mighty 790am. In fact, you can ask YOUR own question about your lawn or garden by calling 701-237-5948 or texting 35270.

ON THIS EPISODE:
- Tree pruning – Dave answers listener questions about the appropriate time to prune trees. The general rule of thumb is before they leave out so early spring is the optimal time to get pruning taken care of. Included in the conversation are spring care for evergreens. During winter’s with heavy, wet snow, a lot of evergreens need some pruning or attention as lower branches may have been frozen into snow banks or had animal damage.
- Bulbs – Listeners are desperate to extend the life of some bulb flowers they received. Dave makes note that saving a bulb from now until the Fall is not advisable as they use up most of their energy staying alive and have little left to survive the winter. If you have some bulbs from a flower that you grew in your home and would like to plant the bulb outside, do so immediately and you run a 50/50 shot of that bulb growing. You won’t get any flowers this year, but may get some green and then growth in future years. If you don’t get anything, there just wasn’t enough “umph” left in the bulb to stimulate growth. Replant a new bulb next year.
- Earthworms – This spring has been a rude melt with many in the Red River Valley seeing earthworm and vole damage to their lawns. Earthworm damage looks like little mounds of dirt in your yard and, when dry, can be very difficult to mend. Now is the perfect time to get into your yard with a rake and push down the hills. By raking your yard, it will spread the small mounds and level things out while the soil is still moist and easier to work with.
Enjoy this and a lot of other great questions about lawn and gardening in this episode of Plant Talk.
