When an individual is unable to make medical decisions for themselves – emergencies, comas, etc, a loved one is looked to by medical staff to help make decisions for that person.
It might be your mother, your father, your son, your daughter, your grandparent, your spouse – whoever it is, the decision you are making is not really yours. It is your interpretation of what their wishes are.
Unfortunately, a lot of people (from age 18 and up) don’t take the time to share their wishes with their family or put together a healthcare directive that includes all the information you can imagine. From measures used to keep you alive temporarily or for a longer term, a healthcare directive and a direct conversation can mean a world of difference when having a conference with a medical provider.
It Takes Two is joined by Stephen Astrup, Regulatory and Project Counsel and Brenda Iverson, Community Relations Director from Hospice of the Red River Valley. They bring insight into healthcare directives and the important discussions surrounding those decisions.
