COVID-19 & Blood Plasma Transfusions
The US is conducting trials of plasma transfusions for COVID-19 patients. In these trails, plasma from people who have recovered from the virus will be used in those still fighting it.
Locally, Vitalant’s Fargo location will be partnering with local hospitals to collect plasma donations. Vitalant expects to be able to collect donations as early as this week. Jennifer Bredahl, Community Ambassador Director of Vitalant in Fargo, says she is surprised the trial process, which usually takes months, is happening very quickly.
If you have recently recovered from COVID-19, you should work with your physician to obtain the appropriate paperwork before calling Vitalant. .
Vitalent has worked on similar clinical trials in the past, like H1N1.
Blood donations
While some new COVID-19 guidelines are being implemented at their locations, Vitalant is still accepting blood donations.
Blood has a shelf life, and in some cases, can save a life. Bredahl encourages the younger population to step-up during this pandemic. She says in the past, when they are in desperate need of blood donations, older generations have come out to help. Now, during a global pandemic that threatens those with underlying health conditions and the elderly, she says it would be nice to see the younger people coming out so those more at risk can stay home.
At Vitlalant, you can donate as young as 16 years with the permission of a parent. Starting at 17 years, you do not need permission of a parent or guardian.
