Honey production in 2019 from North Dakota producers with five or more colonies totaled 33.8 million pounds, down 15 percent from 2018 according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service Honey Report.
North Dakota ranked first in the nation for honey production for the sixteenth consecutive year.
Prices for the 2019 crop averaged $1.40 per pound, down from $1.87 per pound in 2018. The total value of honey produced in 2019 was $47.3 million, down 36 percent from 2018.
Honey production from producers with five or more colonies in Minnesota totaled 6.96 million pounds in 2019.
This was a 4 percent decrease from the 7.26 million pounds produced in 2018.
The number of honey-producing colonies in the state decreased from 119,000 colonies in 2018 to 118,000 colonies in 2019.
Yield per colony in Minnesota averaged 59 pounds, down 2 pounds per colony from 2018. Minnesota remains ranked seventh nationally in honey production, unchanged from last year.
Honey stocks as of December in Minnesota, excluding stocks under government loan programs, were more than 3 million pounds, a 164 percent increase from 2018.
The state’s 2019 honey crop was valued at $11.3 million, down nearly 20% from the previous year’s $14.1 million. The average price per pound for all marketing channels in Minnesota was $1.63, down 31 cents from 2018.
