Fargo Shanley standout Reile Payne was named Miss Basketball in North Dakota on Friday.
Payne is the fourth player from Shanley to win the award and the first since Sarah Jacobson in 2016.
“Her leadership on and off the court was one of a kind,” said Shanley head coach Steve Jacobson on Payne. “Her work ethic will help the younger girls in the system try to develop and be like a Reile Payne. Very proud of her and her teammates, Reile will be the first to tell you, without them she would not be where she is today.”
Payne, played on varsity for the Deacons since eighth grade and started her freshman season. She helped Shanley to the Class A girls basketball championship game this year, before the tournament was suspended due to COVID-19.
Miss Basketball has been handed out annually since 1984 and goes to the state’s top senior in high school. The North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association votes on the award.
Payne is headed to play basketball and volleyball at Bismarck State College in the fall.
Miss Basketball nominations: Reile Payne of Fargo Shanley, Jes Mertens of Devils Lake, Lakyn Darras of Mandan, Alexis Dressler of Bismarck Legacy, Allie Nelson of Minot, Kaity Hove of Trenton and Callie Ronningen of Langdon Area-Edmore-Munich.
