FARGO (KFGO) – A mural taken from a photo of climate activist Greta Thunberg will go on permanent display in March in downtown Fargo. The mural will be located in an alley adjacent to the Front Street Taproom on Main Avenue.
The photo was taken by North Dakota artist/photographer Shane Balkowitsch. The mural is a large representation of the original wet plate glass photograph which shows Thunberg standing in a field on the Standing Rock Sioux Indian Reservation.
Balkowitsch originally planned to display the mural on the outside wall of a bakery in Bismarck, but the plans were scrapped after threats of a boycott and vandalism.
“I want to thank the citizens of Fargo for their kindness and generosity and grassroots effort in giving a safe haven for this piece of art” Balkowitsch said. “We must stand up for each other, we must look to each other for support and kindness. I am not from Fargo but the fact that this work is being embraced means the world to me at this time.”
The original wet plate photo is now in the permanent archives of the Library of Congress.
