Not long ago, winter was a time when only canned or frozen fruit could scratch that itch for something citrus-y or sweet. Now, thanks to advanced shipping methods, year round growing and enhanced genetic technology – we are enjoying all types of fruit during any months.
Blake and Kevin from Cashwise Foods stopped into the KFGO studios to talk about all the fruits people are buying, requesting and trying in their stores. The first is a year round favorite with a twist. The Cosmic Crisp is Washington state’s newest favorite. A cousin to the red delicious, this sweet treat packs a punch and (at least in the case of the ones JJ and Amy saw) are HUGE. When asked how apples stay fresh all year when they are harvested once in the fall, Blake informed us that apples are sealed in an air tight vault that keeps the freshness much longer. Looking to get your produce at home more shelf life? These air tight containers are mighty spendy – but don’t let us tell you how to spend your cash.

Prepared fruits and veggies are a trend that gets bigger every year. Pre-chopped onion, peeled oranges and more are becoming a regular find. The cooler section is now filled with not only the building blocks for winter favorites like chili or spaghetti, but also healthy lunch options like broccoli and carrots. Convenience is king in the produce aisle.
