Coronavirus
In this podcast: Rik Heller, an expert on the spread of infectious disease and the founder of
Wello
, the first hands-free, self-service temperature screening device, joins Amy Iler & Eric Johnson.
The outbreak of a new coronavirus stemming from China has killed six people and afflicted nearly 300 others. Many are comparing this to the Global SARS Outbreak 17 years ago. During November 2002 through July 2003, a total of 8,098 people got sick worldwide.
UPDATE: We now know there has been a confirmed case in the United States:
A Washington state man who recently traveled to China has been diagnosed with the coronavirus, becoming the first confirmed U.S. case of the newly identified illness that has killed six people in China and sickened some 300 others across Asia.
The patient, identified only as a man in his 30s, fell ill over the weekend after traveling to his hometown in China and was diagnosed with the coronavirus on Monday, Washington Governor Jay Inslee told reporters at a press conference in Seattle. (

Know more about fever
Heller’s invention, the Wello, is able to scan, at the most accurate point, for a fever. Everyone has a different fever level. And, as we get older, we get colder. Fever is as low as 99.5 in adults. For example, if you are over the age of 65 or older, a temperature of 98.7 on an oral thermometer is not normal and can be a fever.
We have always been taught 98.6, however, 97.8-97.6 is the average human temperature. And as we get older, it will go to as low as 97.2.
Heller says he is excited about the future. They are working on a portable unit that will be used more easily at daycares.
Humidification
And, Heller says, hydration is the key to staying healthy. Many studies have proved that staying hydrated makes you less susceptible to illness. The amount of hydration we need to stay healthy is much higher in the winter, so, drink water and humidify your home and work.
