One Year Later
It was a little over a year ago when we last talked to Rebecca Undem about their petition to keep Shopko’s doors open in Oakes, North Dakota. And, as we know now, the Shopko did close its doors.
Undem says after realizing the decision was chain-wide reduction and not specific to their store and rent costs, they “hunkered down” and made the best of it.
She says while they still miss the convenience at times, Oakes maintains a strong core of businesses that thrive and continue to support their community.
In fact, one of the great success stories of Shopko closing is two of the former full time employees started their own businesses after the closing!
And, what happens with the building now? Undem says with the “shocking” price tag, many people hope it can be a collaboration of businesses that step up to purchase the property.
