Some were shocked and others were left with questions when the board of the Prairie Roots Food Co-Op announced that they would be closing down the store on the corner of University and NP Ave.
The total time the store was open totaled less than three years, but the community embraced the idea of a public owned store that celebrated natural foods, the community it served and the vibrant downtown lifestyle of Fargo, ND.
Tim Mathern, who sits on the board for Prairie Roots, noted that it wasn’t one big item that caused the sudden closing discussions – but several small pieces. A business plan that was bogged down by fixed costs, sets backs in inventory and competition all played their part.
Mr. Mathern mentioned that the total staff has been cut down to two people (meaning management, accounting, stocking, checking, cleaning, etc…) will all be done by only two individuals. The store will also cut down their hours and the decision to open the doors comes down to a day to day discussion.
The future of the co-op is simple. It still exists, but the store no longer will. If in the future, the co-op could reopen another location – but no plans exist in the current form.
