The House of Representatives formally impeached President Donald Trump on charges that he abused the power of his office for domestic political advantage. The vote, almost entirely on party lines, makes Trump the only first-term President to be impeached, and the third in our country’s history.
In this podcast: Dr. Barbara Headrick, Professor at Minnesota State University Moorhead, joins IT2 to talk about it.
While there have been demands for the impeachment of most presidents, three have actually been impeached. And, the first two, Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1999, were acquitted by the United States Senate and not removed from office.
The same is expected to happen with Donald Trump. A two thirds majority vote in the Senate is needed to remove him from office. Which would mean the Democrats would need 20 Republicans to vote with them… a near impossible feat.
Listen to the podcast above for more details about the previous impeachments & the process moving forward.
