It was huge news when LiveNation – the new owner of WeFest – announced that they are taking a year off of the 35 plus year old country music festival to reestablish the brand.
Judy Dawson-Einerson is the owner of the Cormorant Bottle Shop in Cormorant Village, MN. She explains what a business owner might be thinking about when it comes to filling some gaps.
A lot of concert goers are left feeling the void of their annual weekend (or week long) trip to Detroit Lakes for camping, concerts and vacation.
What is not being talked about by the masses is the GIANT loss of $$$ to area businesses. From small mom and pop operations like the Cormorant Bottle Shop to the companies that provide ice to the Walmarts who sell cheap camping supplies to the hardware stores to the restaurants that serve up breakfast to concert goers who barely slept the night before. The loss of even one year of WeFest will sting.
There are benchmark weekends to the summer season that can make or break an entire year. For example, Memorial Day or the 4th of July bring massive amounts of vacationers to small towns. If one of those weekends rain out, you are stuck with a massive overstock of goods or an empty cash register. The trickle down effect means less hours for employees, less spending at other establishments, etc…
This is not meant to be a “boo-hoo” but an eye opener about the impact that WeFest makes in our community. Even if you have never attended the festival, never go to the lakes during the summer or think that WeFest has any connection to you at all…you might want to reconsider that thought.
