FARGO, N.D. (KFGO) – The Cass County Commission unanimously voted to okay refugee resettlement in the county. Commission Chair Chad Peterson says the program needs to exist. He says, “We are the good guys..we are the people that help the world.”
Barry Nelson, Chair of the Fargo Human Relations Commission says Fargo has the housing. healthcare system and an educational system that can support this population. The vote is required due to an executive order signed by President Trump in September, requiring consent from Governor Doug Burgum as well as the Cass County Commission in order for the county to receive new refugees.
Burleigh County Commissioners delayed a vote last night because of an overflow crowd and will have to find a larger venue. Several people were in a separate room but had no access to audio or video. The Commission faces a January 21st deadline to either give its consent in writing – or lose federal funding for the refugee resettlement program.
