Many of us have been using a lot of cloud storage…and we didn’t even realize it. As consumers begin using more and more data that is stored and accessed from a cloud service, its clear that we have hit a wall – a pay wall.
Google has become a dominate player in the world of emails, documents and online storage. They allow you to have 15 FREE gigabytes of storage. While the average email uses a small amount of that storage, we’ve gotten lazy about our digital spring cleaning and have amassed mountains of digital content.
You can’t touch it, smell it or taste it, but you can see it. At the very bottom of your Gmail account, you will see a bit of text that says you have used _____ of your 15GB ___%. That shows how much you have used. Now, most casual internet users don’t have to worry…but who is a “casual” user nowadays?
Your smart phone probably backs up to a cloud storage server. You are saving photos to a stream somewhere. You are holding onto that video your uncle sent of a family member taking her first steps. You have 10 years worth of emails from accounting that you don’t need. Birthday lists on Google Docs. Etc. Etc. Etc.
It adds up over time.

joins IT2 to talk about how these services got users hooked on storing things off their device on a cloud server and now that they are hooked, they want to YOU to start paying.
In just a few years, paying a monthly bill for cloud storage will seem as common as paying for your cable bill or Netflix subscription. But the time between now and then may provide a few headaches. Especially if you choose to opt out and find that a massive amount of your memories (pictures, videos, music, documents, etc) could be wiped away.
