If you have ever been summoned for jury duty and immediately thought, “I can’t do this,” you should listen to this podcast and hear the story of a person who overslept and the national story that has erupted.
A 21 year old man was sworn in as a juror and the next day…he slept in past the call time. Then, he made the mistake of avoiding the duty. He went to work and did not respond to the phone messages. The judge then made an example out of him and sentenced him to 10 days in jail as well as some serious community service.
UPDATE – When Ashley stopped in, the judge had just rescinded the punishment of jail time and knocked down the community service. The national attention has caused quite the outcry.
Who is wrong here – the 21 year old who ghosted jury duty or a judge who thinks 10 days in jail is a fitting punishment for missing jury duty?
(Ashley Heitkamp)
Ashley Heitkamp from Brudvik law joins It Takes Two to discuss the implications of missing jury duty. There is a law. You are breaking that law when you do not show up for jury duty. As a US citizen, this is one of your responsibilities.
Listen to the podcast to hear about the penalties, why the defense would want to delay the trial until this young man could show up and Ashley’s comments on the importance of being a responsible citizen.
