Harvest time has arrived for a lot of area gardeners!
Dave takes questions on Buttercup squash – when is the right time to harvest? A light frost is alright for squash, don’t harvest when it’s still a bright orange or green – wait for a way color. Where the squash sits on the ground should develop a golden spot. When in serious doubt, push a thumbnail in by the stem – if it goes in easy, it’s not ripe yet.
One caller has problems with pepper plants, Dave has some advice that will help next year – they simply aren’t getting pollinated.
If you are planning on planting bulbs, now is a great time. Waiting to plant in the Spring – even the early Spring – can be a losing gamble. Get quality bulbs for a quality plant. No telling how long something has been sitting on the shelf of a big box store or being stored in the hot/cold/hot/cold and damaging the bulb.
Parsnips, similar to tomatoes, can be left in the ground just until its about to freeze. The longer they rest outside WITHOUT FREEZING the longer they will still be good to eat as soon as winter hits.
