Dr. James Kaplan loves Scandinavian culture. He specializes in numerous types of study – but the Nordic cultures capture his imagination. Dr. Kaplan was nice enough to stop by the KFGO studios to chat with It Takes Two about why the Scandinavians are obsessed with crime and detective novels.
Over the long Easter weekend, Norwegians gather up armfuls of crime novels (which are released the weeks leading up to Easter) and retire to a cozy reading nook. Armed with chocolate and mutton, the nation partakes in a truly unique tradition. Read a bunch of detective novels during one of the world’s most celebrated religious holidays.
These novels are traditionally slow and contain a whodunnit story marked with a flawed detective.
Dr. Kaplan points back to a 1923 newspaper “story” that captivated the nation – though it was actually an advertisement.
The rest is history.
Dr. Kaplan’s speaking tour includes stops in:
Bagley Public Library – Sept 24th
Hawley Public Library – Sept 25th
Moorhead Public Library – Sept 26th
