Every Thursday during the growing season, retired horticulturalist Dave Decock answers your lawn and garden questions. There is hardly a plant, tree, shrub or pest he hasn’t encountered over the years. 1pm – 2pm during It Takes Two on the Mighty 790am KFGO.

If you are wondering if your pruning, trimming or fertilizing project is a “go” now that we are post-Labor Day…Dave has a yes/no answer. Things like pruning back trees can be done, but your better off waiting until the Spring for major work. Unless you have a specific reason to trim now – wait.
That being said, you can cut back a hosta or daylily whenever you are ready.
Rhubarb, don’t let the old wives tales convince you, rhubarb is just fine to be picked and eaten as long as it is still growing. After a frost, the stalks change the feel/stiffness, but they are absolutely fine to eat.
Plus, Dave talks about mowing in the fall. Keeping grass trimmed will keep the voles from setting up in your yard and there are some benefits to mulching SOME leaves into your lawn.
As for fertilizing, Dave suggest going with something that is lower in nitrogen to let plants start getting into hibernation mode. Encouraging growth will just make your lawn or garden less prepared for when winter hits.
