Summer isn’t over yet and there are plenty of ways your four legged friends can be injured or become ill as we enjoy time outdoors. Dr. Derine Winning from Valley Veterinary Hospital in Fargo, ND answers questions from listeners about caring for their pets.
BLUE GREEN ALGAE
In areas of stagnant water, blue green algae can grow and is EXTREMELY life threatening to your animals. Your pets, dogs in particular, can drink the algae and become incredibly sick. They can also swim in the water with the algae, have it dry onto their coat and still get sick later when licking themselves. The best way to prevent this is to keep your pet out of the water. If you fear that they may have come in contact with blue green algae, wipe them off immediately and seek treatment from your veterinarian. This is a serious issue and you should take the care of your pet seriously.

SUNSCREEN FOR DOGS
If you have a pooch that has exposed skin, you can use over the counter sunscreens – BUT make sure you do not use any that contain Zinc. Also, use a lotion based sunscreen instead of an aerosol version to prevent getting any into the eyes or nose of your dog. Lastly, consider the fact that your pet has an extremely high sense of smell. Perfumey lotions can be obnoxious to beings that have a sense of smell as intense as dogs and cats. Be considerate when you choose a sunscreen for your pet. If you are willing to do some shopping and spend a little more – there are several brands that make dog specific sunscreen.
DOG ACUPUNCTURE
A caller asked Dr. Winning her take on dog acupuncture, specifically for a dog that was suffering from back pain due to the breeds elongated back and shorter legs. Dr. Winning uses dog acupuncture herself and believes in the treatment for a great amount of ailments. Several listeners chimed in with their opinions as well – all in the positive. One particular texter said that the acupuncture treatments have changed her dog’s life for the better.
We also discuss pancreatitis, bee sting treatment, eating wild asparagus and a whole lot more. Listen to the podcast for all the great tips and advice from Dr. Derine Winningfrom Valley Veterinary in Fargo, ND
