Crater of Diamonds State Park
Since 1972, this Arkansas state park has been inviting visitors to find diamonds! And, they do. In the podcast above, Park Interpreter, Waymon Cox, joins It Takes 2 to talk about the parks history, the most recent finds and the future.
The field is a volcanic crater. More specifically, the area visitors are searching in the eroded surface of an ancient diamond-bearing volcanic pipe.

2.12 Carat Diamond
While most people dig and shift for the diamonds, a most recent notable find was found sitting on top of the ground! The lucky visitor was a teacher from Nebraska searched for about 2 hours and found a 2.12 carat diamond.

Can’t stop, won’t stop
Every year the state park has 4-5 diamonds over 2 carats found. So, how long can they keep this going? Cox says, “Indefinitely”. Back in the ’90’s the state tested the mine to evaluate the deposit that contains the diamonds and it goes 600 feet deep!
So, while it’s not commercially viable, visitors to this state park are finding 1-2 diamonds each day… without having to search too hard!
