The family of Denise Anderson believes North Dakota’s domestic violence laws are too restrictive.
52-year-old Denise Marie Anderson died of traumatic injuries last Thursday. Sheldon Davis has been charged with murder, endangering by fire or explosion, and arson.
The family of Denise Anderson says the
Fargo Police Department was aware of prior abuse and did not appropriately follow through with Denise’s domestic violence complaints because of North Dakota’s Century Code.
“Sometimes the law just doesn’t work for someone”
In the podcast above: North Dakota Senator Kathy Hogan, District 21 of North Fargo, joins Amy & JJ to discuss how she is researching this issue in hopes to get some answers for the family.
In the wake of her death, the family has started a change.org petition to encourage legislators to review North Dakota’s Century Code. As of Tuesday afternoon, the petition is just a few hundred signatures away from its goal of 2500.
North Dakota Senator Kathy Hogan says, “First, we have to see if it’s the language or the interpretation of the law… and why did the language get written that way?”
Unfortunately, Hogan says, “often tragic situations are what initiate legislation”.
Bipartisan response
Senator Hogan says a number of legislators, from both sides of the aisle, have reached out to her and are interested in working on this issue.
