I think we all can relate to this experience: You have some downtime, so you click on Twitter or Facebook and you find yourself endlessly scrolling… Well, one Senator considers it addicting and wants to legislate social media companies to do away with it!
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo) has introduced the “SMART Act” – which would ban features such as YouTube’s autoplay and Facebook and Twitter’s infinite scrolling.
In this podcast: Tech Correspondent Larry Magid,

joins IT2.
“I don’t get it”
Magic says there is no question in his mind that we spend too much time online, but the American Psychological Association has consistently rejected the use of the word “addiction”.
“This bill would do very little good, it would do a lot of damage to the industry and it doesn’t even begin to solve the problem… I just don’t really get it.”
Where does it stop?
Tech companies are trying to keep you online longer, Netlfix is trying to keep you watching longer, food companies are trying to get you to buy more… this bill is a good talking point for constituents and as Larry describes, “a non-starter”.
In other news: Are tablets going away?
Also discussed in this podcast: tablets. It seems the market is going away… and, honestly, you probably aren’t surprised.
