Plant Talk with Dave Decock – the longest running show on the Mighty 790 KFGO, takes calls from listeners or questions via text about your lawn, your garden, pesky bugs and just about anything else you can imagine during the growing season.
Retired Horticulturalist Dave Decock is a walking encyclopedia of plant knowledge. Combining common sense and scientific study – this is the man with the plan when it comes to your lawn and garden questions.
ON THIS EPISODE:
A question about what to do with the stump from an evergreen tree. Our host wants to know if he can just leave it in the ground without any worries. Dave says it should be fine. You will see some mushroom growth eventually from the rotting roots and maybe some sinking of the ground as the harder elements decompose. There will not be enough acidity to cause any worries.
Callers had questions about trees and roots. For example, what to do with a young spruce tree to ensure it makes it through the winter? Dave suggests staking around the tree and wrapping burlap around the stakes. You should also water it in well before the ground freezes. Wrapping around the stakes will allow the cold temperature and airflow needed, but won’t keep the tree too bundled up and warm (like if you just wrapped the branches)
Root runners, those roots that breach the lawn and then go back down. When dealing with a root runner(s) only remove one a year. Cut it off right where it comes up and right where it comes down, cover with dirt and wait a year to do the next. If you are talking about a runner that comes directly from the trunk of an established tree, Dave advises that you can cut that down anytime.
Thinking of planting some bushes, shrubs or plants to help prevent erosion in an area? Spring is the time to plant those elements. The sooner the better. It will give them more time to establish before the hard rains of summer and will help keep them alive during the winter. Starting midsummer is almost worthless. The roots need time to get into the ground so they can help lock it in place.
A suggestion on getting zucchini to grow longer than four inches with an old fashioned broom method, pruning berry bushes and putting off work for another time when it comes to vining roses!
