Sanford does thousands of knee replacement surgeries every year. And while it’s a good surgery, with good results, Sanford orthopedic surgeon Dr. Todd Sekundiak, from the Sanford Orthopedic Hospital in Fargo, says this technology is taking the surgery to “excellent”.
The technology is robotic assistance called Zimmer Biomet’s ROSA ® Knee System.
Dr. Sekundiak says the “robot” helps align the cutting tools
and balance ligaments during a knee replacement surgery.
After a knee surgery (without robotic assistance), patients find great success with routine knee use (walking, etc.), however, some patients report their knee feeling unstable or too tight with aggressive/sporting activity. With the accuracy and precision of this new technology, it more closely matches your own natural knee.
The precision of robotic assistance creates a much higher level of fit, which can mean better function and hopefully, better longevity.
Dr. Sekundiah says it was important to start using this technology with knee first, as patients needs weren’t always being met. (Knees have the most soft tissue.) However, the next phase will be to implement it for hip and shoulder surgeries.
