Dave Decock joins Amy Iler and JJ Gordon every Thursday during the growing season for a spirited conversation about the grass, the leaves and even pesky bugs – ANYTHING you need some advice about when it comes to your yard, veggies, trees and more.
IN THIS EPISODE:
Dave continues to debunk myths about rhubarb. A caller gets the last laugh in a discussion with her husband when Dave backs her up on a few of the common rhubarb wives’ tales.
For example – the best time to dig up and split rhubarb is in the Spring. As soon as you see the shoots, you can grab the shovel and get going. Rhubarb is a very hardy plant and even a chunk of the root can grow into a healthy plant. Depending on the strength of the root you are transferring and timing, you might get a harvest the same year you transplant.
Dave also debunks the idea that you stop harvesting rhubarb after the 4th of July. While this rule of thumb applies to asparagus, rhubarb can continue to be picked up into fall. As long as the growth is there, you can pick.
If your rhubarb produces a large stalk that is taller than the plant and covered with seeds, simply pull it out. This stalk takes nutrients from the plant and doesn’t help the edible part maintain sweetness/sourness.
Lastly, pull rhubarb directly from the ground, by hand, when picking. DO NOT CUT. Pulling by hand will separate the stock from the bulb and let the root know to start a new stalk. The work is worth it as your rhubarb continues to grow and produce several times during the spring/summer/fall.
This podcast also includes questions about when to split and transplant irises (mid August) versus day lilies and peonies (after Labor Day). A conversation about grubs. Pro tip, if you grab a patch of sick looking grass and the whole thing comes up by hand, like taking a toupee off a bald guy, you probably have grubs and the treatment to get rid of the little guys can take quite some time.
