In Australia, mosquitos are called “mozzies” and they are just as much a nuisance to those Down Under as they are to the inhabitants of the Upper Midwest.
Recently, Australians have started a nice little rumor about controlling mosquitos. Some are turning to coconut oil. Applying it like sunscreen, some claim that it keeps the buzzing at bay.
Amy Iler and JJ Gordon went to a well respected source on Mosquitos – Mike Mclean, spokesman for the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District, and asked him his thoughts.
In the podcast, you will hear Mike’s opinions on not just using coconut oil, but a whole barrage of home remedies like planting sweet lemon eucalyptus grass and whether or not he has seen scientific evidence to prove these “tried and true” tricks.
Also, an interesting conversation about why some people get bit more than others. According to a study, people with O positive blood type can be bit more in the same environment than another person with a different blood type. The color of your clothing, the amount you are sweating and even if you are pregnant all seem to factor in one way or another depending on the study you read.
When it comes down to it, mosquitos live on biting and sucking your blood. That is their base need during a life cycle. If you are there and can be bit – you will probably look just as good as anything to a hungry mosquito.
Mike leaves us saying that his personal findings conclude that Deet is the way to go when selecting a mosquito repellent. Or, of course, you could just wear a long sleeve shirt, pants and outfit a hat with bug mesh around it…
