A brilliant observation
A 13 year-old girl made headlines last week when she decided to try to answer the question: “Do hand dryers hurt kid’s ears?”.
Dr. Matt Frisk, an Audiologist at Hearing Solutions in Fargo says, “the basis of the study is brilliant… (the sound) was first studied at an adult height, not a child’s… and, if you are a child’s height you are twice as close (to the sound).”
Hear more about the study, and Dr. Frisk’s take on long-term damage in the podcast above.
Ringing in the ears
Tinnitus is the name used for the constant ringing in the ear. And, most want to know: “Is there a cure, can you “reverse” it”?
There isn’t a cure, but Dr. Frisk says, “We don’t give up on the tinnitus patients”. Especially with amplification, there are ways to help. If you have hearing loss and ringing in your ears, with the new hearing aids, there are ways to introduce some masking noise to reduce the sensation.
Other “cures”: The most important thing is noise reduction. Also, Vitamin E has proved to help reduce the ringing in recent onsets, and while other products are on the market, Dr. Frisk hasn’t seen any research behind them that say they “really” work.
