Ford Driving Skills for Life
The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) is seeking teen drivers with a permit or license between the ages of 14-18 to attend a FREE, one-day Ford Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) safety event at the Fargo Armed Forces Reserve Center Complex on Wednesday, August 7.
In this podcast: Carol Thurn joins It Takes 2 to talk about the program!
From learning to back up a trailer safely to checking tread depth and air in tires, this event will be interesting and engaging for all attendees.

Alive at 25
Defensive Driving Course
This young driver intervention program zeroes in on drivers between
the ages of 14 and 24 – the group most likely to be involved in fatal
collisions. This highly interactive program teaches young drivers how
to take control of situations by taking responsibility for their own
driving behavior.
Instructors will use personal examples, workbook exercises,
interactive media segments, group discussions and role playing to help
young drivers develop convictions and strategies to keep them safer
on the road. Qualifies for insurance discount and point reduction.
ATV Simulator
The ATV simulator gives the effect of operating a machine at
different positions so participants know how to position their bodies
when going uphill, downhill, side hilling, turning and so forth. This
allows them the ability to practice positions on an actual ATV without
having to go on an actual operational ATV.
Car Care Clinic
This event will show teens how to check the tread depth and air in
tires, where the spare tire is located, where to place the jack in need to
change a tire, check belts and fluids in a vehicle.
Danger in Every Step
Impairment-Drug & Alcohol Mat – The DIES™ (Danger in Every Step) Impairment Activity mat presents
the challenge of strolling along a sidewalk, walking down a set of
stairs, or conducting a roadside sobriety test after being stopped by
law enforcement. Consequences such as tripping down a set of stairs,
falling off a sidewalk into traffic, passing out in an unknown location,
and being arrested for impaired driving are just a few of the dangers
you can highlight using the DIES™ mat.
Driving Course
Participants can test their skills while driving in a closed course
targeting distracted driving. Participants send and receive text
messages replicating distracted driving conditions. Participants will
also take a selfie photo.
Deutscher Display
The relatives of the Deutscher family donated their crashed car for
educational purposes. The car is the centerpiece of a traveling display
to give viewers an opportunity to see first-hand the tragic result of
drunken driving where 3 people and an unborn baby all died due to
the poor decision of another driver to drive while drunk.
Motorcycle Simulator
The Honda SMART Riding Trainer (Safe Motorcyclist Awareness
and Recognition Trainer) is a computerized traffic simulator that
allows beginning riders the opportunity to operate a motorcycle in
real-life situations without the inherent real-world risks and
consequences. This gives the rider the opportunity to experience
hazard prediction courses and test their crash avoidance and
prediction skills.
No Zone – Share the Road
The No Zones are danger areas around trucks and buses where crashes
are more likely to occur. Some of the No-Zones are actual blind spots
where your vehicle “disappears” from the view of the truck or bus
driver. The participants will get to sit in a truck and look in the
mirrors to realize the blind spots for a driver.
Parallel Parking
Parallel parking can be a challenge for even the most seasoned
drivers. Many drivers go to great lengths to avoid having to parallel
park. While parallel parking is a little tricky and takes some practice
to master, there is no reason to be nervous about this driving skill.
Participants will learn how to parallel park with a Driver Education
Instructor.
Pedal Carts
The Fatal Vision Goggles are a specially designed pair of goggles that
simulate the visual impairment caused by alcohol. The wearer
experiences a loss of equilibrium, which is one of the effects of
intoxication. There are several different strengths of goggles
beginning at legal limit. The use of pedal carts is to simulate the
effects while driving.
Rollover Simulator
The simulator is designed to simulate a 30-mph rollover crash using
165 pound dummies. The cab of a pickup truck is mounted to a trailer
and rotates to simulate a roll-over crash.
Seat Belt Convincer
The Seat Belt Convincer provides hands-on seat belt safety lessons. It
is designed to simulate an automobile crash at approximately 5 mph.
The Seat Belt Convincer demonstrates that even at a low speed, the
impact of a crash is noticeable to your body.
Simulate Impaired DriviNg Experience (SIDNE)
The SIDNE is a battery-powered vehicle that simulates the effects of
distracted driving drug and alcohol impairment on a motorist’s ability
to operate a motor vehicle. This highly interactive vehicle operates in
two modes, normal and impaired. In normal mode, the vehicle’s
steering, braking, and acceleration respond appropriately. In impaired
mode, the vehicle reacts with delayed steering, braking, and
acceleration, simulating the effects of a vehicle being driven by a
distracted or impaired driver.
U-HAUL – Safe Trailering
This event will provide basic, practical trailering information and
guidelines for beginning first-time trailer/towing drivers. This event
will demonstrate how to: safely hook up a trailer to a tow vehicle;
properly load a trailer using the 60-40 rule (60 percent weight in the
front, 40 percent in the back); and successfully back up a trailer.
Virtual Driver Interactive – AAA
The compact, portable driving simulator provides realistic training for
both novice and experienced drivers. Users can be placed in
dangerous situations without putting themselves or others in danger.
AAA North Dakota uses the simulator to demonstrate the dangers of
distracted and impaired driving.
This program only comes to Fargo every few years, so make sure to sign-up for your opportunity today.
