Financial crimes perpetrated by a loved one can be small – taking mom to the grocery store and adding some personal items each week to large scale theft like moving property or assets into another person’s name.
Fraud Expert Phil Swan suggests setting up conversations with your bank. Let them know additional individuals will have access to the senior’s account. Checks and balances with statements. If statements suddenly start going to a new address or you can no longer gain access to them – red flag! Additional steps can be monitoring on a regular basis, requiring receipts and choosing the right person to oversee the finances.
Being smart and overly cautious can save a huge headache and heartache later on.
