FARGO (KFGO) – Rep. Collin Peterson, the Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, says President Trump’s plan to impose new tariffs against Mexico will have real consequences.
“It will make it almost impossible to pass the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement” Peterson said during an interview on KFGO’s News & Views.
Peterson, who represents Minnesota’s 7th District says Trump has created a “big problem” and says the new tariffs will likely result in some form of retaliation.
“They’ll probably put a tariff on dairy products or whatever” Peterson said. “I think there will be some kind of retaliation. I don’t think there’s any good outcome out of this, from what I can see.”
Trump says he plans to impose tariffs starting at 5% and increase to 25% if Mexico doesn’t convince him that it’s doing more against illegal immigration.
The tariffs go into effect June 10.
